International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia - celebration 17th May
IDAHO takes place this Friday and the Queen Mary Diversity and Equality team and QM Out (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender - LGBT - staff network) have organised a number of events to celebrate the day. The Rainbow Flag, a symbol of LGBT diversity recognised worldwide, will be flying from the Queens’ Building at Mile End Campus. There will also be an information point set up in Library Square where you will be able to talk to staff from the QM Diversity and Equality Team and members of our LGBT staff network, as well as to make some purchases from the bake sale, proceeds of which go to the Albert Kennedy Trust. In the evening QM Out will be hosting students and staff at the David Sizer Lecture Theatre in Francis Bancroft for two film screenings: ‘My Summer of Love’ at 5.30pm, followed by ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert'. QM now collect sexual orientation of its staff - update your details
From Summer 2012, Queen Mary will start recording staff sexual orientation as part of our commitment to equality and diversity. You can update your details via MyHR, more information here.
QM has joined Stonewall Diversity Champion Programme
QM is now part of Stonewall Diversity Champion programme, which help employers and service providers promoting equality for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual people.

B-MEntor Scheme
QM has partnered with leading London institutions to set a mentoring scheme where senior academics from the 5 institutions mentor Black and Ethnic Minorities (BME) academic staff. The scheme is in its pilot stage and will start in the academic year 2012-2013.
The partner institutions are Imperial College London, Institute of Education, King's College London and University College London.

A updated version of the Disabled staff handbook is now available. It provides information for disabled employees and their managers, especially in terms of providing reasonable adjustments and accessing funding.

Equality Act
The Equality Act received the Royal Assent in April 2010.
This Act replaces nine major pieces of discrimination legislation with a single Statute. The Act introduces a single public sector equality duty which will cover race, gender, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief, pregnancy, maternity and gender reassignment.
