Induction and probation FAQs

Can I extend the probation period?

In certain circumstances, the probation period can be extended. Please see section 7:9 of the HR Code of Practice: Probation [PDF 97 KB].

Can my probationary period be shortened if I am struggling with my role?

Yes.  The intervals over which your performance during probation is assessed may be reduced if your conduct or performance has been below expectations.  Your line manager should identify any areas of weakness and how you need to improve.  They may also identify help, support or training to reach the desired level of performance.  Please see section 7:4 footnote 2 of the HR Code of Practice: Probation [PDF 97 KB].

Who can I bring with me to probationary meetings?

If a mentor has been appointed to assist you in the probation period, you may ask them to attend any of your probationary assessment meetings.  If it seems that you are likely to fail probation, you have a right to be accompanied by another person of your choice at any hearing that is empowered to dismiss you.
