In line with Queen Mary's well-being policy, staff can take advantage of discounted membership at on on-site gym and can take part in the cycle to work scheme.
Cycle to work scheme
As part of the Government's Green Transport Plan Initiative and in line with Queen Mary’s well-being policy, the Cycle to Work Scheme encourages staff to cycle to work by offering significant savings on the cost of bikes and accessories. It is a salary sacrifice scheme that allows you to pay for the bike in monthly instalments whilst saving through tax and NI exemptions.
Cyclescheme, a service provider selected by Queen Mary, use local independent bike shops to help supply the right package of bike, accessories and safety equipment with expert advice.
Health Club Membership
Staff have access to Queen Mary’s Health Club, located at the Mile End campus. The club, Qmotion, offers excellent discounted membership deals to staff and features a cardio vascular zone, a resistance zone and a free weights area. Additionally, there are dedicated stretching areas, two fitness studios that host classes ranging from yoga to circuits and a treatment room.
All members of staff are welcome to attend Get Active sessions, run by the Students’ Union. It’s a great way to get some exercise in a low-commitment setting and to meet other members of staff, with sessions costing no more than £2.50.
Whether you’re looking to try a new sport or to carry on with something you’ve played before, Get Active gives you the opportunity to take part in sport in a fun, social, affordable and relaxed environment. Most of the sessions take place on campus, so it’s really easy to join a session on your way home from work or even during a lunch break!
All abilities are welcome, equipment is provided, and there are over 30 sessions each week to choose from. Find out more on the Students’ Union website.
Queen Mary Runners
Queen Mary running group meets every Wednesday at 12.30pm within the East Corridor, Ground Floor, Queens Building, Mile End campus. The groups is free.
There are two groups that set off at this time every week; the first does a run of approximately 4.5 miles to various local destinations, and another second group, which is aimed at beginners, or those wishing to improve their training, which heads off into Mile End Park with the QMSU Get Active trainer, Paul Lewis. Both groups consist of staff and student runners, and anyone from absolute beginner to experienced runner is more than welcome to join us.
The local area is superb for running, with easy access to the Regent’s Canal, the Thames, Docklands, and even Tower Bridge and London Bridge, if longer runs are required. We can advise on routes and assist runners with longer runs on other days. Also, we set out to build runners up from a beginner’s level via the training sessions within Mile End Park.
If you are interested, please contact Paul Kent: email@example.com who will include your name within the list of regular runners, which means that you will receive a regular Wednesday morning invitation to run with us. Our group is recognised by Run England, which is organised by England Athletics, and our currently registered team name is ‘QMUL Runners.’
Queen Mary has an active cyclists' group with over 200 members!
