Grading and job evaluation

We have now completed the job evaluation project that we started as a result of the National Pay Framework Agreement.

We have taken the opportunity to review the way we evaluate jobs at QM and have produced a new method which is underpinned by a set of Grade Profiles for each job family at every grade and Job Profile which contains the duties required for your job.  They have been produced to:

Simplify and Streamline

The Grade Profiles simplify the process of obtaining a grade for a job by using a completely fresh approach. Instead of drawing up a job description and waiting for an evaluation panel to attribute a grade, the Grade Profile is already evaluated. All that is required is to select the most appropriate level of profile (which then needs to be justified by the specific duties attached to it)

Remove inconsistency

The content of the Grade Profile does not alter. As all of the Grade Profiles are already evaluated and confirmed to match the grade they represent, there is no issue around inconsistent results emerging from evaluation panels.

What is a Grade Profile?

A Grade Profile is a means of establishing the level of a job. It is made up of key criteria which are based on the Hay methodology (the chosen job evaluation system at QM):-

Knowledge, Skills & Expertise
Working Environment
Freedom to Act & Decision Making
Communication & Networking
Finance/Resource Management
People Management

In its entirety it sets the skill requirement for each grade through the categories listed above. The Grade Profiles have been created using Hay and the results of our job evaluation exercise. By building on all of the work undertaken to date it has enabled us to produce a set of profiles which are fit for purpose QM.

It is a different approach to our previous job description method and can be used for both recruitment and promotion purposes.

A Grade Profile allows you to see what is required of a job at a particular level and introduces a level of consistency across QM whilst still allowing flexibility of staffing structures at local level.

The Grade Profile must be attached to a Job Profile which is the section where you create your list of job duties (this is the part that most resembles the 'old' job description).  The duties contained in the Job Profile must be commensurate with the level of Grade Profile selected.  To make this easier we have produced a library of pre-graded statements which you can choose from to incorporate into your Job Profile.

All Grade & Job Profile templates are available on the following pages, as are the library of statements.

Please submit your vacancy and re-grading requests to  your HR Consultant/HR Adviser

If you have a vacancy and the role has already been graded as part of the National Pay Framework project, you can use the result of that evaluation for your vacant position – you do not need to have it evaluated again.  Of course, it may be the case that you anticipated a different grade to that provided and decide to improve and resubmit the job description, but there is no requirement for you to do this. The purpose of this approach is to turn around vacancies as quickly as possible.
